Core Curriculum Requirements (42 semester credit hours) Service learning is offered through the UTSA Student Activities Office and focuses on activities designed around civic engagements that address or meet community needs. Faculty-led and other study abroad opportunities are organized by the Education Abroad Services office. Independent studies are arranged in consultation with Anthropology faculty and may include research on areas not normally covered by organized coursework, work associated with a professor’s research, or a student’s independent research project. Internships are arranged through the Undergraduate Advisor of Record and are designed to provide students with experiences at a wide variety of institutions in the region, including the Department’s Center for Archaeological Research and the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures. Thirty-nine of the total semester credit hours required for the degree must be at the upper-division level.Īll candidates for this degree must fulfill the Core Curriculum requirements and the degree requirements, which are listed below.Īs part of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts Signature Experience, which seeks to offer students opportunities to apply ideas and knowledge in real-world settings, the Department of Anthropology encourages students to take advantage of internships, independent studies, study abroad, research opportunities, and service learning as part of their undergraduate program of study. The minimum number of semester credit hours required for this degree, including Core Curriculum requirements, is 120. Students interested in this program should contact their faculty advisors for additional information. The completed thesis must be approved by the supervising faculty sponsor and another departmental faculty member. Students applying for Department Honors usually enroll in the appropriate honors thesis courses during their final two semesters, although other arrangements are possible with the approval of the faculty advisor. The minimum grade point averages must be maintained for students to receive the approval of the Department Honors Committee and the discipline faculty. To be eligible for the program, students must have a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 at UTSA and a minimum grade point average of 3.5 in their major at UTSA. Selection of students for honors designation is based on the student’s academic performance and recommendation by the faculty in the student’s major discipline. The Department of Anthropology awards Department Honors to certain of its outstanding students and provides the opportunity for advanced study under close faculty supervision. Department Honors may also be earned in Anthropology. The Department of Anthropology offers a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Anthropology and minors in Anthropology, Archaeological Practice, and American Indian Studies.
